Mohamed Larbi Rahhali
Born in 1956 in Morocco. Lives and works in Tetouan, Morocco.
Animating the quotidian shapes and a perspective understanding of the time, even though deeply personal, extending to a global scale, Larbi reveals the practical way of life as a consistent experience of the artistic creation thanks to the imaginative use of found objects and dispositive conceived to evoke the actual relationships between human and earth. Reconciling conceptual, scientific and craft vocabularies, we are witnesses of the inside a matchbox, working as choreographic devices between order and chaos, the sea horizon and the interstellar space, the personal memory and the collective psyché...
Larbi owns a multiple professional path as visual artist, having learnt different handcraft technics coming from the Medina of Tetouan, built elaborated cinema sets and also worked as a teacher at the Institut des Beaux Arts. Furthermore, his intimate relation with the sea as a fisher is crucial to understand his practice as a whole.
His collective exhibitions include Elsewhere, New Museum, New York (2015), Sous nos yeux part.3, MACBA, Barcelona, Spain (2015), Sous nos yeux Part.2, Kunsthalle centre d’art contemporain, Mulhouse, France (2013), Sentences on the bank and other activities, Darat Al Funun, Aman, Jordan (2010). He participated to the workshop 3RS Maroc led by Seamus Farrell and organised by L’appartement 22 between Rabat, Fes and Tetouan (2007). Mind Moves Matter presented at L’appartement 22 is his first solo exhibition.
